The Faculty of Transportation Engineering (formerly the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering) was established in 2011. It includes three departments: the Naval Architecture Department, the Marine Engineering Department and the Automotive Engineering Department. The Faculty is responsible for training and researching in the area of Naval Architecture (such as Ship Design, Ship Building, Marine Engineering and Equipment) and Automotive Engineering, with a focus on Fishing Vessels.
The Faculty also takes a part in graduate studies (master’s and doctorates) in the field of Naval Architecture (since 1990) and Automotive Engineering (since 2010). Currently, the Faculty has over 1,000 students and over 40 experienced faculty members, of whom 80% have completed postgraduate education, including 5 Associate Professors and 5 PhDs.
The Faculty has cooperated with various famous universities throughout the world in the field of Naval Architecture, including Ulsan College (South Korea), NTNU (Norway), Australian Marine College (AMC), Hyundai Vinashin Shipyard, Oshima Shipyard (Japan), and Cam Ranh Shipyard. As part of these cooperative arrangements, many staff and students have had the opportunity to study abroad. Recently, the top senior students of our Faculty have received scholarships to study at Ulsan College, Korea.
These students have been particularly selected to accomplish a program from which they will receive diplomas from both universities (Nha Trang University and Ulsan College) and will be offered jobs at the Hyundai Vinashin Shipyard.
Department of Naval Architecture
The Naval Architecture department was established in 1998. It was formerly known as the Boat Division (from 1998 to 2006). In 2006, it was renamed the Department of Shipbuilding (until 2011). It has carried the current name since May 9, 2011. The staff has grown from merely five faculty members to a group of fifteen highly qualified faculty members, including two Associate Professors - PhDs, three PhDs, three research PhDs, one master and six engineers who graduated from Korea and Norway. Currently, the Department offers programs in Naval Architecture at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Department has recently increased investment in the following facilities: Division of practical shipbuilding technology, division of ship design, laboratory building and fishing vessels, division of practical welding of ships, division of Mechanical Engineering for fishing boats. In these areas, students have the opportunity to experience the work of a shipbuilding engineer, from reading designs, to lofting, expanding the shell and hull welding. Throughout the process, students learn to create an accurate ship model made of wood, composite, and steel material with fully detailed construction and outfitting.
The Division of Ship Design possesses over 20 powerful computers and equipment including plotters, projectors, and ship design software such as: Autoship, ShipConstructor. The Division also uses structural analysis software such as: MS. Patran, and Abaqus.
In addition to academic instruction, the Naval Architecture Department conducts scientific research. The Department has carried out a series of contracts for the Branch of Maritime Resource Protection in the local areas including: designing the traditional pattern of fishing vessel for provinces, surveying the pattern of fishing vessels for central provinces, designing high-speed canoes to travel by FRP, designing cruise ships and handing ship oil spills, reinforcing coracle stability, testing the quality of ships for thickness of the shell and the quality of the weld seam, and simulating and testing the impact of the load to the ship structure.
In addition, the Naval Architecture department has established relationships in close cooperation with the ship building and repairing facilities in the region and the country as Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard, Cam Ranh Shipyard, Dung Quat Shipyard, Saigon Shipyard, PTSC Co. Ltd, Vietnam Register (VR), and Korea Register (KR). The Naval Architecture department also has an established exchange program with the University of Ulsan and NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology for undergraduate students. As part of this exchange, every year around 10 overseas students enroll in the program. Students participating in this program are able to find employment immediately upon graduating.
With the quality of the staff, facilities, research experience, and collaborative international relationships, the Naval Architecture department is equipped to provide students with an advanced learning environment that constantly strives to meet the changing needs society and the ideal conditions for working and studying.
Department of Marine Engineering
The forerunner of the Department of Marine Engineering, Nha Trang University was the Mechanical Engineering fisheries Department, which was founded in 1966 at the University of Fisheries. The Department was the first building as part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the university. The Marine Engineering Department has spent 47 years growing and developing its staff. Today, the faculty consists of individuals who have Bachelors degrees, Masters degrees, and Doctorates. Nha Trang University strives to develop a multi-sectoral, multi-level learning environment.
While the Marine Engineering Department fits in the Mechanical Engineering discipline but with a specific focus on ships, the University leaders have identified this department as a vital part of the fishery industry because of the importance of developing new and better equipment and technology.
The Marine Engineering Department is responsible for training over 200 college and university level students per year. The Department also instructs vocational and technical workers and conducts training and retraining classes for fishery ship chief engineers and mechanical crews. We also provide opportunities for professionals to participate in postgraduate training in specialized ship equipment. The Marine Engineering Department have continued to take proactive steps to create a more competitive program by upgrading facilities, improving training, conducting scientific research and applying advance scientific research to production.
Department of Automotive Engineering
The Automotive Engineering Department was established in 2006. It was separated from the Marine Engineering Department – Mechanical Engineering Faculty. The Department takes responsibility for training learners to work in the automotive industry. The Automotive engineering department is responsible for training and researching in different areas within the industry, with a specific focus on fishing vessels.
The department also conducts Masters level instruction. Graduates of the program are capable of assuming a variety of responsibilities in component production and automotive assembly line of firms. They are also trained to be qualified to repair and maintain automotive parts, to teach and conduct research at colleges and vocational schools, and work in automotive businesses and agencies.

Research in the Ministry’s level
- Research writing software automates the theoretical ship’s line drawing according to the given coordinates and the design parameters (B99-33 to 27-TD), MSc Nguyen Dinh Long.
- The study determined the frequency of free vibration of the fiber reinforced composite panels designed for use in bottom fishing boats (B99-33-23), Nguyen Van Dat, PhD.
- Study of some mechanical – physical – chemical solutions in order to enhance the tribology and wear of Polyamid plastic used in shaft bearing. Principal Researcher: Le Ba Khang, Code B-2001-33-02.
- The study proposes some of solutions to help improve the quality of education comprehensively in University of Fisheries (B2002-33-13), Vu Van Xung, PhD.
- Study the automotive design of ship’s line to meet the diverse needs of current fishing vessels (B2004-33-36), Tran Gia Thai, PhD.
- Investigation of XADO industrial application in order to utilization efficiency of small power, high speed ship Diesel engine. Principal Researcher: Le Ba Khang, Code B-2007-13-19.
Projects for performance and technology transfer
The Naval Architecture Department’s contracts with companies are varied and numerous. They focus on the Department’s strengths in training and research. These include some of the following recent projects:
- Surveys and technical documentation for the type of fishing vessel and fish boats for the Department of Maritime Resource Protection used in local areas.
- Design of high-speed vessels, passenger vessels, fishing boats, glass bottom boats, boats to clean oil spills and FRP and wooden shells for companies.
- Investigation and analysis of vessel pattern and the influence of fishing and fishing equipment on fishing vessels in the central provinces of the Bien Dong Corporation.
- Non-destructive testing structure of hull for Z753 Shipyard. - Building tugboat model for Song Thu shipyard - Da Nang.
- Transferring software used in the design calculations and fabrication of ships such as: sea keeping calculation software, ship propeller design software, the strength and vibration of propeller shaft systems that have pillow software, the strength, vibration and duration of calculation software of complex structure in different materials.
