Nha Trang University (NTU) was originally established in 1959 as the Faculty of Fisheries under Hanoi University of Agriculture, now known as Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA). Pursuant to Decision No.155-CP dated August 16th, 1966, issued by the Prime Minister, the Faculty was separated and reorganized as the School of Fisheries. In 1977, the institution was relocated from Hai Phong to Nha Trang and subsequently renamed the University of Marine Products. In 1980, it was officially renamed the University of Fisheries. The institution has borne its current name “Nha Trang University” since July 25th, 2006, in accordance with Decision No.172/2006/QĐ-TTg of the Prime Minister.

Located on Lasan Hill in the northeastern area of Nha Trang City, with two sides bordering the sea, Nha Trang University is considered one of the most scenic universities in Vietnam. With more than 65 years of establishment and development, the University has evolved into a reputable multi-disciplinary, multi-field, and multi-level institution. Its traditional strengths lie in marine science, technology, and fisheries. As a leading institution in fisheries science and aquaculture at the national level, Nha Trang University continues to play a key role in promoting the sustainable development of Vietnam’s marine economy and in providing high-quality human resources to meet the inevitable demands of the country’s international integration.


Overview of Nha Trang University
In alignment with the national higher education reform agenda, Nha Trang University initiated its transition from a year-based training model to a credit-based training system as early as 1990. The credit-based system was gradually implemented from 1995, contributing to the enhancement of training quality, academic services, and the promotion of a student-centered learning approach. In 2009, Nha Trang University was among the first 20 universities in Vietnam to undergo institutional assessment and accreditation by the National Council for Higher Education Accreditation and Quality Assurance. The University successfully achieved its second round of institutional accreditation in 2018 and the third in 2023, conducted by the Center for Educational Quality Accreditation, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (CEA – HCM). Furthermore, in July 2024, the University participated in the university benchmarking and ranking process and was awarded a 5-star rating with an application-oriented focus under the University Performance Metrics (UPM) system of the Innovation Institute.

Nha Trang University is a comprehensive higher education institution comprising 16 administrative, advisory, and support units, along with 18 academic, research, and service units. As of 2024, the University offers a broad and diversified portfolio of academic programs, including 11 doctoral programs, 19 master’s programs, and 36 undergraduate majors, spanning more than 60 specialized fields. In addition, the University provides associate degree programs, vocational training, short-term training courses, summer programs, and various other educational offerings to meet the evolving needs of society. Furthermore, the University maintains a consistent annual enrollment of over 3,700 new undergraduate students, bringing the total student population to approximately 17,200, encompassing both undergraduate and graduate levels. Students are drawn from across the nation as well as from a variety of international backgrounds, contributing to a vibrant and diverse academic community. As reported in May 2025, the University employs more than 660 staff members, including 33 professors and associate professors, 152 doctoral degree holders and 328 master degree holders, over 60% of whom have received their professional training in developed countries, contributing significantly to the University's academic strength and international orientation.

With a strong foundation in training and research, NTU has become a trusted partner of numerous international organizations. The University has effectively collaborated in the implementation of various international academic programs, including the NOMA-FAME Master’s program in Fisheries and Aquaculture Economics, and the NORHED Master’s program in Marine Ecosystem Management and Climate Change (both in partnership with Norwegian institutions); bilingual French-Vietnamese Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Business Administration and Tourism (in collaboration with French partners); and a Master’s program in Food Technology (in cooperation with Belgian partners), among others. Furthermore, NTU has also designed and delivered a range of short-term training courses tailored to the specific needs of international partners. These programs have been conducted regularly since 2009 and have attracted students from universities in the United States, Australia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, and other countries. NTU takes pride in contributing to the professional and academic development of international students. Many of them have gone on to publish research in reputable scientific journals, receive scholarships for further education in developed countries, or assume leadership positions in various organizations. By continuing to promote innovation and diversification in both the content and format of its training programs, NTU is committed to remaining a distinctive and valuable destination for international education.
