Launching the project “Prevention, reduction and recycling of fishnet pollution in Vietnamese coastal waters (NET-Works)“
From February 27 to March 1, 2023, the meeting of the Management Board and launching of the project "Prevention, reduction and recycling of fishing gear waste in Vietnamese waters" (NET-Works) was held at Nha Trang University.
The NET-Works project is implemented by SSH Osfalia School (Germany) in collaboration with Nha Trang University and partners in Vietnam. The project focuses on solving the problem of fishing gear waste nets in the seas of Vietnam to reduce the number of fishing nets that are unused, lost, or discarded, raising awareness to avoid loss of fishing gear for fishermen, businesses, and fisheries management agencies as well as Vietnamese society in general. The project aims to reduce environmental impact and create a market for recycled raw materials from these sources to create a closed value chain.
At the conference, representatives of project members discussed the implementation of major goals including reducing unused, lost or discarded fishing gear by coastal fishing activities; implementing a closed economic cycle in the seafood industry, aiming to create a market for recycled raw materials; design environmentally friendly recycled products: the project will offer alternative solutions, i.e. recycle more and use environmentally friendly materials. The project will also contribute to the application of research results to the development of teaching at higher education institutions; thereby raising environmental awareness and action for sustainable development. Representatives of project members also presented and discussed other related issues such as: financial management and supervision during project implementation; the current situation of fishing gear waste in Vietnam's seas; Relevant research works are currently being carried out…
At the member universities of the NET-WORKS project (including Nha Trang University; Ha Long University; Kien Giang University), activities to improve capacity and knowledge for lecturers and students in the field The area of waste reduction and recycling will be focused on implementation. This will enhance the ability to design modern, environment-oriented curricula; attracting interest and creating a place where businesses from Vietnam's plastic industry with around 2,000 businesses can get help to develop recycled materials and new products. This opportunity will enhance the innovation capacity of Vietnamese enterprises to reduce waste in the sea. Along with that, courses integrated with scientific communication under the project will also be an opportunity for universities to fulfill their mission of spreading knowledge and innovation to society.
