Nha Trang University organizes training on combating illegal fishing within the framework of the IUU Project
From May 22 to June 9, 2023, Nha Trang University held a training course on combating illegal fishing related to monitoring, control and supervision. This is an activity within the framework of the Project “Training course against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing related to monitoring, control and supervision (MCS) and the program staff exchange program” (IUU Project).
Attending the course were 40 students from Southeast Asia, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea. The course participants are lecturers from Nha Trang University (Institute of Fisheries Science and Technology; Faculty of Economics; Faculty of Food Technology), experts from the Australian Fisheries Administration, and some invited experts from many countries. The training course will provide participants with theoretical and practical knowledge related to fisheries monitoring, control, and monitoring activities to address IUU fishing in Southeast Asia effectively. Participants were also introduced to and shared their knowledge of national, regional, and international legal and regulatory frameworks related to combating IUU fishing; identify and apply tools, technologies, and processes to support activities that contribute to effective fisheries management in the region. In addition, trainees will also be guided in MCS operation planning skills, surveying fishing vessels to determine the possibility of IUU fishing; capture the social dimensions of fisheries in Southeast Asia...
The IUU project is funded by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (DAFF) for implementation from 2023-2026. The project aims to help ASEAN countries develop human resources and develop regional action plans to promote responsible fishing practices including combating illegal fishing, improving monitoring, control and supervision, and cooperation in fisheries management.
