The delegation of Nha Trang University discussed the results of Course 1 of the IUU Project in Australia
From September 25 - 29, 2023, a group of lecturers from Nha Trang University had a business trip to Darwin - Australia within the framework of the project "Training course against illegal, undeclared and unregulated fishing related to tracking, control and supervision, and staff exchange program" (IUU Project)
This is a project funded by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to be implemented from 2023-2026. The project aims to support ASEAN countries in human resource development and develop regional action plans, to promote responsible fishing practices, including combating illegal fishing, and improving monitoring, control and supervision capabilities and cooperation in fisheries management.
The working group of Nha Trang University includes 05 lecturers - members of the project. On the Australian Government side, the working program has the participation of members of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), and the Australian Fisheries Management Agency (AFMA). The business trip aims to discuss the results of the preliminary quality assessment of Course 1 - phase 1 that took place in May 2023 and discuss and develop lecture content for Course 1 - phase 2 (to be held in November 2023).
Attending the course were 40 students from Southeast Asian countries, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea. Participating in teaching the course are lecturers from Nha Trang University (Institute of Fisheries Science and Technology; Faculty of Economics; Faculty of Food Technology), experts from the Australian fisheries management agency, and a number of invited experts from many countries. The training course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge related to fisheries monitoring, control, and surveillance activities to effectively solve the problem of IUU fishing in Southeast Asia. Participants are also introduced to and share knowledge about national, regional, and international legal and regulatory frameworks related to combating IUU fishing; Identify and apply tools, technologies, and processes to support activities that contribute to effective fisheries management in the region. In addition, students will also be instructed in MCS operating planning skills, investigating fishing vessels to determine the possibility of IUU fishing; captures the social aspects of fisheries in Southeast Asia...
