The Faculty of Economics was established in November 20, 1982, on the foundation of Fisheries Economics Department with the purpose of developing talented young professionals in the field of fisheries economics. At its inception, the Faculty had three departments and offered one major, fisheries economics.
Over the years, the Faculty has added more programs: Corporate accounting and business administration in 1996, commercial economics in 2002, and corporate finance in 2004. An MA program in Fisheries Economics was launched in 2004, and another MA program in Business Administration was set up in 2008. Over time, the number and quality of lecturers at the Faculty have increased dramatically.
In response to soaring economic development of Vietnam, in August 2010 the Faculty was reorganized to compose of five departments: 1) The Department of Business Administration, 2) The Department of Business Commerce, 3) The Department of Tourism Management, 4) The Department of Economics, and 5) The Department of Fisheries Economics. The Faculty consists of 58 members (staff and lecturers), 1.500 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students. IN 2010, Faculty of Accounting and Finance was established, separating from the Faculty of Economics.
In accordance with the University’s strategy, to diversify student education, the Faculty has taken proactive steps to create additional majors, such as Marketing and Investment Economics. In the near future, Nha Trang University will establish PhD programs in Fisheries Economics and Business Administration in order to better prepare our students to meet the dynamic demands of society. Short courses in strategic management, planning and data analysis will also be offered for all professional and personal development learner needs.
Department of Business Administration
Established in 1998, the Department of Business Administration is one of the Faculty’s most prestigious departments with experience in both instruction and research. The Department has trained thousands of students, participated in many research projects at all levels, compiled textbooks, lectures, and study materials for students and has published numerous articles in national and international scientific journals and conferences.
The Department offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs (4 years and 2 years, respectively) with core course offerings in business law, microeconomics, macroeconomics, management theory, international business, principles of marketing, econometrics, organizational behavior, marketing management, quality management, human resource management, production management, financial management, risk management, project management, and strategic management.
Management courses are taught primarily in G7 Building with classrooms equipped with advanced technology. Undergraduate students enthusiastically participate in research and have achieved significant results. Graduates of the Department of Business Administration have consistently found rewarding careers in leadership positions in both private and public-sector organizations provincially, nationally, and internationally.
Department of Business Commerce
The Department of Business Commerce provides undergraduates with knowledge and skills to handle import and export procedures as well as to manage commercial enterprises. With an attractive and realistic curriculum, students are trained to possess fundamental knowledge as well as essential soft skills to be able to realize their ambitions in future. Commercial English is included as a required course with the purpose to promote the employment of graduate students in international business environment. The study program is of 4-year duration and is organized according to the course credit system.
The lecturers of the Department of Business Commerce are innovative in their teaching methods in order to facilitate students’ learning. Examples are firsthand teaching, problem-based learning, and field study. In addition to teaching knowledge, lecturers at the department are encouraged to include soft skills in their lectures in order to help students live a good life after graduation. Graduates from Department of Business Commerce can work in commercial enterprises, retail sale business such as super markets, and enterprises with focus on import and/or export operations. They have expertise in the fields of Marketing & Business, Import and Export Business, International payment and Consumer behavior.
Department of Tourism Management
The major of Tourism Management was officially established in 2005 to meet the growing demand of manpower for tourism industry in dynamic business environment. Currently the Department has 11 members, most of them are former lecturers from the Business Administration Department and now teaching subjects in both majors.
Starting with the first cohort of 70 students, in a short time, Department of Tourism Management has trained over 500 students in Tourism Management. Many graduates have found good jobs and received good compliments from their employers.
Currently, the Department of Tourism Management is applying a new academic program specialized for Tourism Management, in which the total number of credits will be reduced to 130. Some tourism-focused subjects that students will learn include: Tourism Management; National and International Tourism Laws; Service Quality Management; Marketing for Tourism; Tourist Psychology and Guiding Methods; Reception Management; Food Processing Management; Restaurant Management; Hotel Management; Meeting & Event Management and Tour Management, Strategy Management, Human Resource Management, Tourism Business Planning, etc.
We have been successful in establishing relationship with hotels, restaurants and tour operators in assisting student internship positions, job search and collaboration in teaching.
Department of Economics
The Department of Economics was established in 2010 based on the restructuring and renaming the Department of Basic Economics of the Faculty of Economics. The Department is responsible for managing the programme quality and teaching plans of the assigned courses. The department has had 14 lecturers who are in charge of 22 courses for the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Commerce Business, the Department of Tourism Management, the Department of Fisheries Economics, the Department of Business Accounting, and the Department of Finance.
Most of the lecturers of the department have graduate degrees, among those three lecturers are doing PhD studies. All our lecturers do not only have advanced knowledge but also professional ethics.
Along with the rapid increase in training scale of the Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Accounting -and Finance in recent years, the amount of teaching hours of the Department of Economics has increased greatly. However, we have successfully completed large volumes of courses and teaching hours assigned by the University as well as the Faculty of Economics. Our key strategy for development is always improving the content and methods of teaching, and doing research in order to improve education quality.
Department of Fisheries Economics
Department of Fisheries Economics, formerly known as Department of Majors Economics, was established in 1980. Lecturers at the Department specialize in fisheries economics and management with experience in teaching and researching. We have participated in multiple research projects at all levels, compiled textbooks, lectures, and study materials for students and has published numerous articles in national and international scientific journals and conferences.
The Department offers a full range of degree as bachelor and master (4 years and 2 years) with course offerings in fisheries economics, fisheries enterprise management, fisheries of marketing, environmental economics…
Management courses are taught primarily in Building G7 with multi-media classrooms. Graduates of the Department of Fisheries Economics have gone on to rewarding careers and leadership in private and public sectors. Our students can participate in strategy development and policy-economic development in national and local fisheries management; analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of business activities in the fisheries business; organize material purchasing, marketing research and development in value chain of seafood products; management and administration of business activities in the seafood business; and so on.
