The predecessor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nha Trang University was the Department of Electrical Engineering, established in 1967 as part of the Department of Fisheries Industry at the University of Fisheries.
In 2001, the department was split into two: Marine Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Electronics and Automation, both under the Department of Marine Operations.
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was officially established by a decision of the Rector of Nha Trang University on 5 September 2011, comprising three departments: Industrial Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation, and Physics.
In the early period from 1967 to 1976, the Department of Electrical Engineering had six staff members, the majority of whom had been trained abroad in countries such as the Soviet Union and Poland, and three laboratories: Electrical Engineering, Marine Electrical Machinery, and Marine Electrical Equipment. The department played a significant role in teaching foundational subjects, thereby training many generations of captains and chief engineers capable of operating the world’s most modern fishing vessels.
Currently, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nha Trang University has 20 staff members across three departments and 14 practical laboratories: Electrical Engineering; Electronic Engineering; Electrical Equipment; PLC; Electrical Systems; Digital Engineering; Microprocessors and Microcontrollers; Audio-Video Engineering; Power Electronics; Electric Drives; Marine Electronics; Applied Electronics; Automation and Sensors; General Physics.
The Department’s teaching staff comprises 10 PhD holders and 5 Master’s degree holders. Furthermore, many retired staff members with advanced academic qualifications in the fields of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, who reside in Nha Trang, continue to actively participate in and support the Department’s teaching and scientific research activities.
Currently, the Department has over 600 full-time undergraduate students enrolled at the University and 140 part-time students. The Department offers undergraduate programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as top-up programmes from vocational and college levels to undergraduate level. Although the Department was established in 2011, the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme had been in operation since 2006 (under the management of the Department of Marine Operations). Many generations of electrical engineers have graduated, meeting the demands of society. From Cohort 62, the Department of Electrical Engineering has managed and delivered the Electrical Engineering programme, and from Cohort 64, the Department was tasked by the University with managing and delivering the Control and Automation Engineering programme as well.
Senior staff within the Department have conducted numerous research projects on nanoelectronics, maritime electronics, electrical systems, IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), teaching methods and educational management, which have been published in both domestic and international scientific journals.
To better meet the demand for human resources in the electrification and electronics sectors, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is constantly improving the quality of its training and scientific research, and is focusing on the fields of New Energy (solar energy, wind energy), Automation (microprocessors, PLCs), power supply quality, and specialised fields involving electrical and electronic equipment for fishing vessels.
By implementing credit-based education centred on the learner, continuously updating lectures with new techniques and technologies, and strengthening links with individuals, agencies, organisations and partner institutions both domestically and internationally, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering will reach new heights in both quality and quantity.
The staff and students of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering look forward to receiving the support of the University’s Executive Board, as well as the cooperation of domestic and international organisations and partner institutions, so that the Department’s educational and scientific research endeavours may live up to the rich history and standing of Nha Trang University both nationally and regionally. The predecessor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nha Trang University was the Department of Electrical Engineering, established in 1967 as part of the Department of Fisheries Industry at the University of Fisheries.
