The Department of Fisheries Science builds on the 65 year legacy of the traditional Faculty of Fishing and Maritime Studies of Nha Trang University (previously the University of Fisheries), which has played a pioneering role in fisheries education, research, and technology transfer in Viet Nam. As a core academic unit, the Department is responsible for multi level training, scientific research, and community service in the fields of fisheries science, fishing technology, fisheries management, and the sustainable exploitation and conservation of marine living resources.
The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fisheries science and fisheries management, with curricula that integrate modern fishing gear and vessel technology, fisheries oceanography, maritime and fisheries law, safety at sea, and innovative approaches to responsible and efficient fishing operations. With a highly qualified academic staff trained in leading fisheries countries such as Norway, Australia, Japan, Canada, and the Netherlands, the Department actively engages in national and international research projects, technical consultancy, and technology transfer to support the modernization and sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
In addition to teaching and research, the Department maintains close cooperation with government agencies, research institutes, and industry partners to provide scientific services, professional training, and policy advice related to fishing technology, fisheries management, and marine environmental protection. Through these activities, the Department of Fisheries Science contributes significantly to building human capacity, advancing scientific knowledge, and promoting a resilient and sustainable blue economy for Viet Nam and the wider region.
