Study on new bacteria against pathogens in ornate spiny lobster

The project: Study on new bacteria strains as probiotics against pathogens in ornate spiny lobster in Vietnam, coordinated by Dr. Pham Thu Thuy (Institute of Biotechnology and Environment) from 4/2011 to 4/2013.

The aim of the project is to screen new strains with antimicrobial activity against pathogenic Vibrio on lobster for the development of probiotics and estimate the protocols for the production of probiotics for lobsters cultured in Vietnam.

The results isolated new bacterial strains with antagonistic effect on pathogenic Vibrio on aquatic animals, and determine the protocols for the production of freezing-dried probiotics for lobsters. This is the first report that Vibrio owensii DY05 may be a pathogen on lobster at the post-larvae stage. Moreover, total 3 kg of freeze-dried probiotics Bio - Lobster 1 and Bio - Lobster 2 were produced with the cell density of 108 CFU/g and 10% maltodextrin supplemented.

The results from the in vivo tests of probiotics on lobster in the lab condition have shown that these probiotics improved the growth of lobster and reduced the dealth rate (20-26,67%) of lobster after challenged with V. owensii DY05.  To date the study on probiotics for lobster is relatively new in Vietnam. This is the first study, thus just at the laboratory scale. Finally, 02 M.Sc students in Post-harvest Technology and Aquaculture were trained, and 04 research articles and 01 conference report were published from the new findings.
