Identifing poisonous marine species in Nha Trang

The research is investigated by lecturers of Institute of Aquaculture - Nha Trang University, MSc. Le Thi Hong Mo and MSc. Tran Van Dung. The objective of the study is to understand the situation of exploitation and use; determine the species composition, build up the specimen, and propose solutions to prevent some poisonous marine species in Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa.

The research has identified 18 species of poisonous fish, 10 species of poisonous crabs, 13 species of mollusks, one species of worms gas, 2 species of echinoderms often exploited by local people. These species are used as food for animals and human, in aquarium, and for decoration. In general, people lacks (1) understanding of the poisonous marine species, (2) how to identify poisonous parts, (3) methods of preservation and processing of the species, especially for collectors, consumers and tourists. This is the underlying causes leading to the aquatic food poisoning often occurs.

Authors have built and preserved the wet and dry samples in Museum of Marine Creatures of Nha Trang University and posters warning about poisonous fish, crabs, mollusks for research, teaching, and propaganda.

From the preliminary results of the research, the next research will focus on better understanding the poisonous components and their changes in species, seasons, distribution and environmental factors. In the long term, research should focus on planning, exploitation and use of poisonous species for medical purposes and export. In which, storage technology, pre-processing for not contaminate fresh meat and fish are primary concerns.
